Spanish police has confirmed that the suspected driver behind the Barcelona terror attack, Younes Abouyaaqoub has been shot dead, putting an end to the global manhunt for Europe’s most-wanted man. He said the suspect was wearing what turned out to be a fake explosives belt.

All the suspects on the list hail from Ripoll, a quiet, upscale town of 10,000 about 100 kilometres north of Barcelona.

Abouyaaqoub was the only one still at large.

At this time, police have not provided an update to Abouyaaqoub’s condition. Two officers then pulled weapons and fired.

Both suspects were arrested on Sunday, according to 2M.

The terror cell behind the attack in Barcelona that left 13 people dead has been dismantled, Spain’s Interior Minister Juan Ignacio Zoido says.

Earlier on Monday, police had launched an appeal for information about the 22-year-old fugitive, believed to be the last remaining member of a 12-man cell suspected of plotting last week’s deadly attacks.

It later emerged that Abouyaaquob was also suspected of stabbing to death the driver of a auto he hijacked while trying to evade capture by the authorities, bringing the death toll to 15.

Police said Younes Abouyaaqoub, the purported driver of the van that rammed into a crowd of people in a Barcelona tourist district, was finally located in the Subirats neighborhood of Barcelona on Monday. Two died in the explosion that injured Houli Chemlal and police shot and killed six others.

The death toll from the attacks reached 15 after a man died in a related attack in Cambrils, and the driver of Abouyaaquob’s getaway auto was pronounced dead. That would bring the total number of victims to 15.

The driver of the vehicle, named as Spanish national Pau Pérez, was found stabbed to death in the back seat, becoming the 15th victim of the Barcelona attack and a later attack in the resort of Cambrils.

Locals familiar with Es Satty said the imam showed no signs of extremism leading up to the attacks. Meanwhile, the Catalan police chief added that all the victims have been identified.

This is a breaking news story and will be updated.
