Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi has walked into the territory of laptop with the launch of their Macbook inspired Mi Notebook Air at a special event in Beijing. The company has made quality smartphones, tablets, power banks, headphones, wrist band, action-cam, tv, drone bike, smart weighing scales to water purifiers at an affordable price & now this.
The Mi Notebook Air will come in two variants – a 13.3-inch 1080p display version with a 2.3GHz Intel Core i5-6200U (Turbo up to 2.7GHz), 8GB of DDR4 RAM, an Nvidia Geforce 940MX GPU, a 256GB PCI-e SSD with a factory expandable SATA SSD slot, and 802.11AC Wi-Fi. It measures 309.6mm x 210.9mm x 14.8mm (12.18″ × 8.3″ × 0.58″) and weighs 2.82 pounds (1.28kg) & has a 9.5 hour battery life. This model will cost about $750 (RMB 4999).
The other variant is for people who have a low budget but still want to have good performance. It packs a 12.5-inch 1080p display with a 1.1GHz (Turbo up to 2.2GHz) Intel Core M3 with Intel HD 515 integrated graphics, 4GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD, and 802.11AC Wi-Fi. It measures 292 x 202 x 12.9mm (11.5″ × 7.95″ × 0.51″) & weighs 1.07kg & has an 11.5 hour battery life. This one is going to cost around $525 (RMB 3499).
Both the laptops will be running on Windows 10 Home out of the box. They have a backlit keyboard, a USB Type-C port for charging them from zero to 50% in 30 minutes & connecting stuffs, HDMI port & a headphone jack. The display has slim under-glass bezels while still managing to fit in a 1MP webcam.
The notebooks have an aluminum based metallic finish with two color options – gold or silver. The devices doesn’t come with a lot of Xiaomi bloatwares but does have their “Mi Sync” software, which presumably will sync some phone data on the fly. The laptop can also be paired to a Mi Band fitness band, so it will automatically unlock when the wearer is near, just like the Apple Watch. At the price they offer for both these laptops they are already in competition not only with Apple but also with other companies like Dell & HP.
