DJI has been informally known as the drone company. They have introduced the best tech possible in drones since the start. Recently they have launched their new aerial camera for their range of UAVs and it is called the Zenmuse Z3. The Zenmuse Z3 is unique for the fact that it is the first drone camera by DJI to support built-in optical zoom.

The Zenmuse Z3 has the ability to shoot videos at 4K at up to 30 frames per second and it can take photos at 12MP resolution. It has up to 7x zoom, breaking them into a 3.5x optical zoom and a 2x digital zoom. DJI is marketing the Zenmuse Z3 mainly for use in “industrial applications.” Let’s say that a drone is being used for surveillance or surveying purposes. The usual way to look closer to the object or person is to physically get closer to the subject. But now with this new camera they don’t have to. It is just a matter of finding it from far away using that zoom.

DJI senior product manager Paul Pan said, “pilots in a search-and-rescue situation, or conducting surveys or inspections, can maintain distance and still zoom in for sharp, detailed images.”

The Zenmuse Z3 has a Sony built 1/2.3 inch camera sensor. It is the same camera sensor found in DJI’s own Inspire 1 and Phantom 4. It also uses DJI’s Lightbridge and Lightbridge 2  video transmission technology. With this  we can send live HD videos up to a distance of 5 kilometers. The Zenmuse Z3 camera is compatible with the Inspire 1, Matrice 100 and Matrice 600 drones. The zoom is controlled by swiping on DJI’s standard app and the camera has a custom “reaction wheel” on its yaw control, allowing for more precise and controlled movement when the camera is zoomed in.

There are some more drone cameras in the market that also have built in zoom. But the Zenmuse Z3 is the first one by DJI. This is probably not the best one in the market. But DJI has given us some great hardware and some fast and responsive software. They are the company that we think about when we think about drones. So this will be a good choice. The Zenmuse Z3 has a price tag of $899.
